Conor and Claire, two young star-crossed lovers from warring families, are separated when the young man's kingdom is mysteriously annihilated in a fire on the eve of his brother's wedding. Conor is introduced to a rag-tag band of former slaves and disenfranchised victims of King Gar's imperialism, awakening in the young leader a deeply embedded spiritual call-to-arms. While Conor is dueling with Vorgeen, a rival chieftan whom he's trying to convince to join his Confederation of Tribes, they are interrupted by a Moor named Quadras, a traveling merchant claiming to have a magic powder.
